Richard Wainscoat has worked for more than 20 years to preserve the dark night sky in Hawaii. His initial focus was preservation of the night sky over Maunakea on the Island of Hawaii, but he has since worked to preserve the dark night sky on all the Hawaiian Islands. His initial interest was in preserving the night sky for astronomy; it is now clear that artificial light causes many other problems, including serious impacts on some endangered species. Fortunately, the actions needed to protect these endangered species are closely aligned with the actions needed to preserve the dark night sky for astronomy and stargazing.
Richard can provide advice on ways to minimize light pollution, preserve the dark night sky, and reduce impacts on endangered species.
He can advise on selection of light fixtures, and selection of as appropriate spectral power distribution. He can also help measure how dark the night sky presently is at your location, and this can be used as a baseline to understand changes that are occurring due to new or changed light fixtures.
